First staged in 1916 by the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America, the PGA Championship stands out from the other men’s majors as the only one of the four contested solely by professionals, with the field comprising some of the game’s finest talents. The second major of the season is held in May at a different venue each year at some of the most celebrated courses in the United States, making each edition a unique spectacle.

Raising the Wanamaker Trophy has a special meaning for any professional golfer. Its imposing size – 75 cm tall and weighing 12 kg – is just as powerful as its symbolism. After all, this trophy embodies a pivotal moment in the history of the sport. In creating the tournament, Rodman Wanamaker, one of the founders of the PGA of America, wanted to give all golf professionals the chance to be recognized as a special competitor.
Rolex Testimonee Phil Mickelson achieved an unprecedented feat at the PGA Championship in 2021. The American became, at age 50, the oldest golfer to win a major. This triumph capped an exceptional career that has produced 45 titles, including six majors.
With more than 30,000 professional members, the PGA of America is one of the world’s largest sporting bodies. Its mission: to increase interest in golf and develop the teaching of the game. The organization’s scope includes staging events for junior players as well as its professional members.
