The U.S. Open

Overcoming the impossible

A formidable course at each edition. A chance for everyone. A reward like no other.

The U.S. Open is the oldest golf major played in the United States. It is held on a different course each June, selected from among the most demanding and made even more difficult for the occasion. From amateurs to professionals, every player stands a chance of winning, but only one will be crowned.

My dad used to say that if you win the U.S. Open, you beat the toughest field on the best golf course.

A tournament of legends

The flagship championship of the United States Golf Association (USGA), the U.S. Open has been the scene of triumph for some of golf’s most legendary names, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods. Established in 1895 at the Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island, it has left its mark on the sport’s history in the United States. Rolex has been the Official Timekeeper of the event since 1980.

A major challenge

The third men’s major of the season, the U.S. Open is perhaps the most complex of them all. It is played on courses that have been specially modified to challenge the best players in the world, and requires exceptional mental and physical preparation.
