The guardian of waterproofness

Presented by Rolex in 1926 and patented, the Oyster case is a major milestone in the history of modern watchmaking. It was, at the time, the world’s first waterproof case for a wristwatch, thanks to its system of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case.

Equipped with an Oyster case in Oystersteel made in our workshops, the Oyster Perpetual is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), as confirmed by the tests carried out as part of the Superlative Chronometer certification process.

The Oyster case, a symbol of robustness and waterproofness, also stands out thanks to the harmony of its proportions, offering the ideal balance between form and function.

Twinlock crown
The double waterproofness system

Our Twinlock winding crown, unveiled in 1953, presents two waterproofness zones. It comprises around 10 components, made from materials rigorously selected on the basis of their intrinsic qualities, such as polymers for the waterproof seals and Oystersteel.

Hermetically screwed to the Oyster case, the Twinlock winding crown is a crucial component that contributes to the Oyster Perpetual’s complete waterproofness to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet).

The Twinlock system is identified by one dot, two dots or a line on the face of the winding crown, depending on its material. As it is made of Oystersteel, the Oyster Perpetual’s Twinlock crown displays a line under the Rolex emblem.

The Oyster Perpetual stands out with dials in various colours, subtle or vibrant: a range of different faces, always sporting a contemporary look. From beige, lavender or pistachio matt lacquer, to candy rose, green, turquoise blue, black or med blue lacquer or sunray-finish silver, they match any style.


The dials are designed at our workshops with the utmost precision. At a glance, they mark the identity of each Oyster Perpetual while ensuring optimal legibility.

Oystersteel
Refined resistance

The Oyster Perpetual is only available in Oystersteel, an exclusive alloy that belongs to the 904L steel family, most commonly used in high-technology environments, such as in the aerospace and chemical industries.

In 1985, Rolex became the first watchmaking brand to use solid blocks of 904L steel for certain cases. Oystersteel is highly corrosion-resistant and retains its shine even when the watch is put to extreme use.

Chromalight display
From darkness to light

Exclusive to Rolex, the Chromalight display gives the Oyster Perpetual optimal legibility in any circumstances. The luminescent material applied by hand to the hour markers and hands is a brilliant white in daylight and emits an intense blue glow in the dark. The performance of this innovative substance clearly exceeds the standards required by watchmaking norms.

Comfort and robustness

Developed in the late 1930s, the Oyster bracelet is the original metal bracelet of the Oyster Perpetual collection. With its rows of broad and slightly curved three-piece links, it combines comfort, elegance and robustness.

On Oyster Perpetual models, the Oyster bracelet comes with a slimmer Oysterclasp as well as the Easylink rapid extension system, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the length of the bracelet by approximately 5 mm for instant comfort.

Calibres 2232 and 3230
Innovation in movement

Carrying Superlative Chronometer certification, the Oyster Perpetual is driven by calibre 2232 for the 28, 31 and 34 mm models and by calibre 3230 for the larger models, 36 and 41 mm in diameter. Entirely developed and manufactured internally, these two self-winding mechanical movements via Perpetual rotor incorporate our latest innovations.

A consummate demonstration of technology, our calibre 2232 guarantees outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability. It is equipped with our Syloxi hairspring, made of silicon. In addition to resisting strong magnetic fields, this hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. Its specific geometry ensures the movement’s regularity in any position. Calibre 2232 is also fitted with high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers and offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours.
Calibre 3230
Calibre 3230 is equipped with our patented Chronergy escapement: a mechanism made from a nickel-phosphorus alloy, virtually insensitive to strong magnetic interference and offering great dependability. This movement also includes our blue Parachrom hairspring in an alloy of niobium, zirconium and oxygen. Resistant to shocks and strong magnetic fields, this hairspring is extremely stable when exposed to temperature fluctuations. Our calibre 3230 offers outstanding performance, particularly in terms of chronometric precision (rate variation of -2/+2 seconds per day), power reserve (approximately 70 hours), shock resistance, convenience and reliability.
