Submariner

Underwater survival tool

Submariner

As an underwater survival tool, the Submariner’s design has been entirely dictated by the practical needs of divers.

Since 1953, the Submariner has evolved technically as it has been endowed with features to improve overall functionality. The first watch was a pioneer and subsequent versions have continued to set the benchmark for divers’ watches.

Unidirectional rotatable bezel

The Submariner’s unidirectional rotatable bezel has knurled edges that offer excellent grip when setting the dive time. It rotates notch by notch, accompanied by distinctive clicks. Thanks to the embedded Chromalight capsule on the zero marker, the bezel can also be used easily in dark underwater environments.

Chromalight display

Legible and functional

The Chromalight display is an innovation that improves visibility in dark environments, an essential feature for divers. An innovative luminescent material emitting a blue glow is applied to the hands, hour markers and the capsule on the bezel.

Hour markers in simple shapes – triangle, circle, rectangle – and broad hour and minute hands enable instant and reliable reading to prevent any risk of confusion underwater.

Thanks to the embedded Chromalight capsule on the zero marker, the bezel can also be used easily in dark underwater environments.

Bracelet, clasp
and extension system

The Oyster bracelet marries engineering and aesthetics, designed to be both robust and comfortable. On the Submariner and Submariner Date, it is equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening, and a Rolex Glidelock extension system, allowing fine adjustments of the bracelet – without using any tools – so that it can be worn comfortably over a diving suit.
No other part of a Rolex is subject to such regular manipulation as the clasp. For the wearer, it provides crucial assurance that their timepiece will remain safely attached. The Oysterlock clasp reconciles the demands made on the Professional watches, with a sublime blend of robust yet sophisticated engineering, simple handling, smooth lines and, above all, security.
This inventive toothed mechanism, located under the clasp cover, enables fine adjustment of the bracelet length, without tools. The Rolex Glidelock on the Oyster bracelet has 10 notches of approximately 2 mm each, allowing the bracelet length to be adjusted easily up to some 20 mm. The watch can therefore be worn over a diving suit up to 3 mm thick.

The Triplock winding crown – fitted with a triple waterproofness system – screws down securely against the case, enhancing the water resistance of the watch.

Submariner

Symbol of waterproofness

The Submariner was the first divers’ wristwatch waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet) when it was launched in 1953. Evolving technically over the years, waterproofness eventually increased to 300 metres (1,000 feet).

Materials

Specially developed for the brand, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family, alloys most commonly used in advanced-technology fields such as the aerospace and chemical industries. Oystersteel is particularly corrosion-resistant, offers an exceptional sheen and maintains its lustre even in the harshest environments.
Rolesor is the meeting of two metals on a Rolex watch: the juxtaposition of gold and steel with their contrasting colours and radiance, in subtly balanced harmony. Gold is coveted for its lustre and nobility. Steel reinforces strength and reliability. Together, they harmoniously combine the best of their properties. A true Rolex signature, Rolesor has featured on Rolex models since the 1920s, and was trademarked as a name in 1933. It is one of the distinctive elements marking the brand’s watches, a true signature.
By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unrivalled ability to cast the highest quality 18 ct gold alloys. According to the proportion of silver, copper or other elements added, different types of 18 ct gold are obtained.

Calibres 3230 and 3235
Superlative movements

The Submariner and Submariner Date models are equipped respectively with calibre 3230 – unveiled in 2020 – and calibre 3235, self-winding mechanical movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Their architecture, manufacturing and innovative features make them singularly precise and reliable.

They are fitted with the exclusive blue Parachrom hairspring that is highly resistant to shocks.
