Her dominance in the late 1970s and 1980s set new standards. With her competitive spirit and natural leadership, Lopez not only excelled on the course but also helped shape the future of the women’s game, inspiring many players who followed in her footsteps.
Setting new standards
Nancy Lopez burst onto the LPGA Tour in 1977 and made history by winning LPGA Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honours as well as the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average, all in her first full season, 1978.
This impressive feat has been unmatched by any female golfer since. Lopez’s exceptional campaign included a record nine victories, including a remarkable streak of five in a row.
Over her illustrious career, Lopez claimed 48 LPGA Tour victories, including three major championships. Her induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame in 1987 came after just 10 years on tour, making her at the time the youngest inductee in history.
Lopez played in the inaugural Solheim Cup in 1990, helping the United States triumph on home soil at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Florida. Fifteen years later, she captained the US team to victory at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana.
