Known for her exacting approach and innovative interpretations, she has become one of the most beloved figures in classical music. Notably, she was the first woman invited to sing in the Sistine Chapel in its 500-year history.
Operatic visionary
With early encouragement from her mother, herself a well-known opera singer and teacher, Bartoli studied at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Her talents were recognized early on, and she made her professional opera debut in 1987 at the Arena di Verona at the age of 21. In 1996, her sensational debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Così fan tutte opened the door to leading roles at prestigious opera houses worldwide.
Bartoli quickly gained recognition for her interpretations of Mozart and Rossini and, soon after, for her favoured repertoire of lesser-known baroque music, where she has brought renewed interest and acclaim.
Known for her distinctive vocal timbre, Bartoli has sung a wide range of roles spanning soprano, mezzo-soprano and alto repertory. Her dedication to music extends to her measured approach; she has only taken on new roles when she felt truly ready and has carefully limited her appearances each season to ensure sustained excellence. A key moment in her career was her 2013 debut in Salzburg in the title role of Norma.
Bartoli’s influence extends far beyond her performances. In 2012, she became Artistic Director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, which is supported by Rolex. Her visionary programming has since earned accolades, bringing unique and ambitious projects to audiences. In 2016, Bartoli founded Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco, an orchestra devoted to historically informed performances, and made history as the first woman appointed Director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.
Among her many honours are five Grammy Awards, a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and the esteemed Herbert von Karajan Music Prize in 2012. She was also inducted into Gramophone’s Hall of Fame that same year. Her recordings, many of which have appeared on classical best-seller charts, reflect a versatile repertoire that spans baroque, classical, and romantic eras, as well as more modern works, attesting to her wide-ranging musical curiosity.
