Distinct from the competitive Oscars®, the event focuses on careers and bodies of work whose influence has shaped cinema over time and continues to inform future generations of filmmakers. The Governors Awards are presented by the Academy’s Board of Governors and include Honorary Awards, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Together, these distinctions acknowledge excellence in directing, producing, acting and humanitarian engagement, as well as exceptional leadership behind the scenes.
Held separately from the Oscars® ceremony, the Governors Awards provide an intimate setting that encourages reflection on the creative process and the individuals behind enduring bodies of work.
