Born in Germany, Kaufmann made his first professional appearance in 1993 and built his career largely in Europe.
In 2006, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in New York as Alfredo in La Traviata, which catapulted him to global fame, along with breakthrough performances at other major opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, and the Royal Opera House in London. Fluent in several languages, he can deliver authentic performances across a variety of operatic traditions. Known for his controlled intensity and sublime phrasing, Kaufmann has impressed critics and audiences alike, whether performing heroic roles or Schubert lieder.
Kaufmann’s career highlights include celebrated performances as Don José in Carmen, Alvaro in La Forza del Destino, Cavaradossi in Tosca, and the title roles in Don Carlo, Otello, Andrea Chenier, Lohengrin and Parsifal.
