The watch could now wind itself while being worn – each movement of the wrist turning the rotor, which drove a mechanism that wound the mainspring. The wearer was therefore freed from having to manually wind the watch.
Rolex’s Perpetual rotor offers further advantages. For one, the constant charging of the mainspring ensured greater regularity of the rate and enhanced the precision of the movement. Moreover, by considerably reducing the need to use the winding crown, the Perpetual rotor effectively completed the Oyster concept as it improved the watch’s precision, waterproofness and reliability.
