Timeless elegance and fair play
Stefan Edberg’s tennis journey began in his native Sweden, rising through the ranks with his distinctive serve-and-volley style of play.
He first gained international attention by achieving the junior Grand Slam® in 1983, a feat that set the stage for his professional success. Edberg won six Grand Slam® singles titles, including two at Wimbledon, where his net play and tactical acumen shone brightly, in 1988 and 1990. His rivalries with contemporaries produced some of the most memorable matches in tennis history, including some epic encounters at Wimbledon.
Beyond his Grand Slam® triumphs, Edberg was a key figure in Sweden’s Davis Cup victories and ranked No. 1 in the world in both singles and doubles, reflecting his versatility and skill across different formats. His graceful on-court demeanour and commitment to fair play earned him the ATP Sportsmanship Award five times. In recognition of this achievement, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) renamed the award the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award in 1996. Edberg’s impact on the sport extended beyond his playing days as he later transitioned into coaching.
