Sir Jackie Stewart, often referred to as “The Flying Scot”, is celebrated as one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula 1®.
His career was marked by extraordinary success, including three FIA Formula 1® Drivers’ World Championships. Stewart understood first-hand the dangers of motor racing and became committed to improving safety standards in the sport. His influence extends way beyond his racing achievements and he has been instrumental in achieving safer conditions for drivers. Extraordinary track record
Sir John Young “Jackie” Stewart, born in Scotland, is a legendary figure in motor racing.
His career is marked by extraordinary success and a profound influence on the sport. He won the FIA Formula One World Championship™ on three occasions (1969, 1971, 1973) and secured 27 victories in 99 Grand Prix starts, an impressive win rate of more than 27 per cent. Stewart’s smooth driving style and strategic acuity made him one of the most outstanding drivers of his era.
The title of his autobiography, Winning Is Not Enough, reflects his approach. “These words represent the central theme of my life,” he says. “They fully reflect the pursuit of excellence, the occasional satisfaction of success, the frustration of defeat and the constant hunger to prove myself.” However, his most enduring legacy stems from his tireless advocacy for safety in motor sport.
Motivated by personal experiences and the loss of several friends on the track, Stewart campaigned vigorously for improved safety measures from the late 1960s onwards. His efforts, often met with initial resistance, led to significant improvements in track design, medical facilities and driver equipment. In recognition of his contributions to motor sport, Stewart was knighted in 2001.
