Dominant force in women’s golf
Lorena Ochoa, Mexico’s golfing prodigy, dominated the LPGA Tour, best illustrated by her holding the World No. 1 ranking for an unprecedented 158 consecutive weeks.
During an illustrious career, she claimed 27 tour victories including two major championships. Her graceful play and competitive spirit have inspired a new generation of golfers, particularly in her native country.
Creating a legacy
Ochoa’s journey began in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she won 44 national junior events.
She then excelled at the University of Arizona, setting a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) record with seven consecutive tournament victories. Turning professional in 2002, Ochoa ascended the LPGA ranks, claiming her first tour victory in 2004. Her dominance peaked with major wins at the AIG Women’s Open at St Andrews in 2007 – the first time it was held at the home of golf – and the Chevron Championship the following year. Ochoa’s impact extends beyond the course through her foundation, which has provided thousands of scholarships to underprivileged children. Her surprise retirement at the pinnacle of her career in 2010, at age 28, was a testament to her commitment to family and philanthropy. In recognition of all her success and the path she set out for others to follow, Ochoa was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017 and into the LPGA Hall of Fame five years later.
