Cristina Mittermeier is a pioneer of conservation photography, and even coined the term.
She uses her lens to tell powerful stories about our planet and its inhabitants. Her work has brought global attention to critical conservation issues by highlighting the beauty and fragility of our world, inspiring action by countless individuals worldwide.
Capturing the essence of preservation
Born in a small town in Mexico, Mittermeier began her career as a marine biologist before transitioning to photography.
She founded the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) in 2005, aiming to use photography as a tool for conservation. Her work has been published in National Geographic, TIME, and other prestigious outlets, shedding light on the impact of climate change on biodiversity, as well as the wisdom that indigenous peoples, as original stewards of the planet, can offer about living in harmony with nature. Her images have won multiple prizes and her advocacy to further protect the ocean and endangered ecosystems have played an important role in conservation efforts such as the reinforcement of protection for the Antarctic Ocean and the expansion of marine-protected areas in the Galápagos Islands.
In 2014, she co-founded SeaLegacy, which builds ocean advocacy around expeditions across the globe that are promoted through photography and other visual media.
Mittermeier’s association with Rolex as a Testimonee began in 2022, reflecting a shared commitment to excellence and environmental preservation.
