Telling our Planet’s Stories
Canadian photographer and filmmaker Paul Nicklen has dedicated his life to protecting the polar regions and marine life around the world. Now, with the support of Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative, he will continue to use his stunning photography to raise awareness of the threats faced by life within those ecosystems while inspiring action to protect them.
Paul Nicklen’s love affair with the polar world started at four years old, when his family moved to Baffin Island in northern Canada. They were one of only three non-Inuit families within a small community, and with no television, telephone or radio for distraction, Nicklen spent most hours out on the sea ice, soaking up the Inuit way of life, observing animals such as seals, polar bears and narwhals, and falling in love with the Arctic environment. That cold, forbidding landscape became his place of comfort.
