Rolex Deepsea

Withstand the impossible

Testing the limits

With its 60-minute unidirectional rotatable bezel fitted with a black Cerachrom insert, its black or D-blue dial and Chromalight display, the Rolex Deepsea is made in service of a special kind of heroism. Introduced in 2008, it prolongs the story of Rolex’s efforts to build watches for deep-sea exploration. Its 44 mm Oyster case, benefitting from the Ringlock system, guarantees its waterproofness to a depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet). Where, to survive, one will need bravery to take on the impossible.

Ringlock system

The Rolex Deepsea owes its exceptional strength, waterproofness and pressure resistance to the exclusive Ringlock system.

This patented case architecture enables the watch to resist the colossal pressure exerted by water at the depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), equivalent to a weight of approximately 3 tonnes on the crystal. Its construction is based on a combination of three superposed elements: a nitrogen-alloyed steel compression ring forms the backbone of the system, accompanied by a thick, slightly domed sapphire crystal and an RLX titanium case back.

Helium escape valve

In pressurized habitats helium slowly penetrates into the watch case. During decompression the gas cannot exit fast enough, creating a pressure build-up that can damage the watch. Rolex engineers created a waterproof escape valve fitted with a spring to allow the helium trapped in the case to be safely and automatically released.

Waterproof to a depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet) and equipped with a unidirectional 60-minute rotatable bezel, the Rolex Deepsea is amongst the ultra-resistant divers’ watches engineered by Rolex for deep-sea exploration.

A paragon of robustness and reliability, the Oyster case of the Rolex Deepsea is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet). Its middle case is crafted from a solid block of particularly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. This model’s 44 mm Oyster case, reinforced with the patented Ringlock system, was designed to provide the highest degree of resistance and reliability in a size that remains wearable and practical.
