Timeless. Yet always
of the moment.
Style of the Datejust 36 mm
The Datejust is the modern archetype of the classic watch, thanks to aesthetics and functions that transcend changes in fashion. Aesthetically, the Datejust has spanned eras, while retaining the enduring codes that make it, notably in its traditional versions, one of the most recognised and recognisable of watches.
Style of the Datejust 36 mm
Gem-setters, like sculptors, finely carve the precious metal to hand-shape the seat in which each gemstone will be perfectly lodged. With the art and craft of a jeweller, the stone is placed and meticulously aligned with the others, then firmly secured in its gold or platinum setting.
Besides the intrinsic quality of the stones, several other criteria contribute to the beauty of Rolex gem-setting: the precise alignment of the height of the gems, their orientation and position, the regularity, strength and proportions of the setting as well as the intricate finishing of the metalwork. A sparkling symphony to enhance the watch and enchant the wearer.
What a Difference
a Date Makes
Function of the Datejust 36 mm
The Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial – hence its name. In the earliest models, the date would begin to change hours before its midnight rendezvous.
In 1955, the date-change mechanism was adapted to operate instantaneously and the date aperture was enhanced with a Cyclops lens, magnifying the date by two and half times for easy reading.
The First Datejust
Spirit of the Datejust 36 mm
The Datejust, introduced in 1945, was the first wristwatch to display the date through an aperture on the dial. Its unique magnifying Cyclops eye, added several years later, became recognised as a Rolex standard. Admired for its classic design, the Datejust has become an iconic symbol of style.
Rolex uses only the finest rubies, sapphires and emeralds to adorn its watches, and employs exceptionally demanding selection criteria. Each stone is meticulously examined by the in-house gemmologists for quality and authenticity. Since these coloured gemstones form naturally in the earth in a varied palette of colours, they are sorted by hand, stone by stone, to ensure that all the gems on a given watch are of the same hue. At Rolex, time and precision are ingredients of beauty.
The subtle floral motif of the Rolesor Datejust 36mm is light, natural - and deceptively simple. In fact, what appear to be petals are none other than the cogs of
a mechanical watch movement, a poetic reminder of
the very essence of a Rolex watch: reliable and precise timekeeping.
The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology. First introduced in the late 1930s, this particularly robust and comfortable metal bracelet with its broad, flat three-piece links remains the most universal bracelet in the Oyster collection. It can be fitted with all types of Rolex clasps, depending on the watch model.
The 36 mm Datejust is equipped with calibre 3135, a self‑winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3135 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.
Certified Swiss Chronometer
The four simple words Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified on a Rolex watch dial mean that the very movement inside the timepiece has endured 15 days and nights of testing by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres – Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), an independent not-for-profit association. To receive COSC certification as a Swiss chronometer, a watch must demonstrate extreme precision in a variety of positions and temperatures. Rolex is unique in the industry: this is the standard level of quality required of every Rolex wristwatch movement.
