The New Oyster Perpetual
The new Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II is presented in 904L steel, with a rotatable bezel featuring for the first time a two-colour ceramic Cerachrom bezel insert in blue and black representing day and night.
Keeping Pace with Changing Times
An obsession with perfection
Although the GMT-Master was designed essentially for professional use, its combination of peerless functionality and rugged good looks has attracted a wider travelling public. As well as appreciating its ability to display different time zones, these travellers admire the robustness and versatile appearance that make the GMT-Master II eminently suitable for globetrotting and, indeed, for any occasion.
A technological and aesthetic feat, the new Cerachrom bezel insert is obtained by a unique process developed by Rolex which allows this ceramic component with two distinct colours to be produced as a single piece. It echoes the traditional two-colour bezel of the original GMT-Master and GMT-Master II models.
The black colour is achieved via a process that consists of impregnating half the insert with a controlled quantity of a solution of chemical compounds. The solution is added before the sintering stage, during which the ceramic acquires its final properties. In the course of this firing, the ceramic densifies and the added compounds react together as well as with the basic material of the blue Cerachrom insert to create the final black colour.
This original and innovative process requires mastery of high-temperature heat treatments to closely control the deformation of the ceramic. The two-colour Cerachrom bezel insert obtained via this process presents a clear cut-off between the two colours.
By virtue of being manufactured in a single piece, the insert acquires homogeneous mechanical properties which respond to the quality and reliability demanded of a Rolex product. This process has a patent pending.
Solid link bracelet and safety clasp
The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex. This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
A superlative chronometer
The GMT-Master II is equipped with calibre 3186, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. In addition to the conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, it features a 24-hour hand to display a second time zone. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3186 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests.
The 3186 is equipped with a Parachrom hairspring, offering greater resistance to shocks and to temperature variations. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.
Certified Swiss Chronometer
The four simple words Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified on a Rolex watch dial mean that the very movement inside the timepiece has endured 15 days and nights of testing by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres – Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), an independent not-for-profit association. To receive COSC certification as a Swiss chronometer, a watch must demonstrate extreme precision in a variety of positions and temperatures. Rolex is unique in the industry: this is the standard level of quality required of every Rolex wristwatch movement.
