The 1962 U.S. Open playoff between Jack Nicklaus – also known as
“The Golden Bear” – and Arnold Palmer marked the beginning of
a dynamic rivalry between two historic players. It was Nicklaus who took home the trophy that year, hitting 71 to Palmer's 74 during the final title round. Although this may have been his first major win, it would not be
his last. The longest and straightest driver of his day, Nicklaus went on
to win a total of 18 majors, including three additional U.S. Open titles
in 1967, 1972 and 1980.
