The greatest prize is prestige

For winning The Open Championship in three successive years, between 1868 and 1870, Tom Morris Jr. was awarded the Championship Belt outright. Subsequently, with no trophy to award, The Open Championship was not played in 1871. The following year, agreement was reached between The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, Prestwick Golf Club and the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers to co-host the Championship, with each contributing towards the cost of a new trophy: the esteemed silver Claret Jug.
