The first Open Championship was held at Prestwick, on Scotland’s Ayrshire coast, on October 17th, 1860. Eight entrants from local clubs played over three rounds of the 12-hole course. Strictly speaking, the first true Open Championship was held the following year when the leading amateurs were also invited to compete.
